Name: Allyson Lough
Major: Integrated
Strategic Communication and Marketing
Occupation: Academic Enhancement Marketing Intern
Hometown: New Market, Virginia
Describe yourself in 3 words: Enthusiastic, optimistic, organized
Favorite Starbucks’ drink? Peppermint mocha frappuccino
Favorite Movie and why: Les Miserables. I love the movie adaptation for the story and the music.
Favorite thing about Academic Enhancement/your job: I really enjoy the personal interaction that we get to do during advising conferences. Most of the work we do happens on computer screens, but I love getting to talk to the parents and students who will actually use our resources.
What would people be surprised to know about you? A group of my friends and I invited Kyle Wiltjer to have lunch with us at Blazer my freshman year. He was so down to earth and it was really fun!
What would you do if you had $1 million to use on yourself? I would travel! There are so many places I want to explore for more than just a couple days.
What is the number one thing on your UK bucket list? Place bets and drink Mint Juleps at the Kentucky Derby.
What’s your dream job and location? My professional career goal is to be an account manager at an advertising firm so that I can work with clients on their promotional strategy. I would really like to live in Chicago or work abroad with an international marketing firm
What influenced your decision to come to UK? I wanted to go out of state, and when I visited UK for Merit Weekend, it seemed like it had the degree program I wanted. I was uncertain about UK until I moved in, but now I’m so glad to be a Wildcat!
Favorite Class at UK: A-S 200. It was so challenging for my first art studio class using digital compositions, but I loved going to class to create pieces
Favorite UK tradition: Singing My Old Kentucky Home at the end of every athletic game. I learned it the first week I was on campus and it reminds me of how happy I am that I chose UK!
Favorite thing about UK/Lexington: I love Keeneland- the racetrack and residence hall!
What are you involved in on campus? Outside of my internship, I am the Senior Resident Advisor in Kirwan II. I love living on campus and making connections with freshman when they move to campus! I will also be an ambassador for the College of Communication and Information this coming year.
Where/how do you like to spend your breaks (i.e. between classes, etc.) on campus? I usually schedule my classes back to back so I won’t be tempted to skip! When I do have a break, I’m usually at a Starbucks with my best friend and her service dog in training, Riley.
What was the hardest part of coming to college and leaving home? I had to learn how to keep in touch with my family and friends from my hometown. I went the farthest away of my friends from high school and couldn’t easily go home for the weekend. Facebook and Skype were really important for staying connected with my Virginia family. I also found an amazing friend group at UK to be my family in Kentucky.
Advice to other students at UK: Take some time away from your work to make college memories. Go to a game at Rupp Arena, see a race at Keeneland, try the donut of the day at North Lime, or have dinner at Bourbon and Toulouse. Exploring Lexington with my friends makes me feel like a true UK student!
